"GIS and www.CemeteryMap.com"
This article was submitted to various publications on 6/19/00.
Now there is a new exciting way to find your family ancestry. In
May of 1999, two students from Iowa State University, Matt Boeck and
Geoff Wood, completed an Independent Study on developing a
cemetery GIS and making it available on-line for the Rosehill Cemetery
in Shelby County, Iowa. Since then the website has been made
available to the public. This on-line searching and genealogical research
tool will help you to find the gravesite of your loved one or help you
to begin the search of your family roots, with the ease of Internet
access from your desktop computer. Currently the site has two
cemeteries you can search through, Harlan Cemetery, in the City of
Harlan, Iowa and Rosehill Cemetery, in the City of Kirkman, Iowa both of
Shelby County.
You can search by first/last name, birth/death year,
addition/lot/plot number, Veteran Status, or cemetery location. The
more information you can provide, the better your search will be. Plus,
if all you know is just one item in the search, such as only a first
name, cemeterymap.com will still activate your search through the
cemetery data available. Once your search is complete the name of your
selection will appear with the following information that's available:
cemetery location, addition/lot/plot number, birth/death year, Veteran
Status, and Owner of Space data. You can also view a picture of the
headstone and a map labeling the location of the selected individual.
CemeteryMap.com will make it easier for those to find their family roots
or to pay one's respects, rather than having to search through records
at the courthouse or having to drive through a number of various
cemeteries.
